The sweetest thing

peachy

I crawl into my bed at night, expecting to be greeted by a snuggly little cue ball baby. Instead, you pull away, squeak and stretch from being disturbed and tickle my nose with that fuzzy head.

It has taken me these two months to get used to you - to realize that you are not my darling little Bella returned to her babyhood. It hurts me to wish I had her back to the size you are, hurts to realize that she'll never be quite that close to me again, hurts to have not yet found that level of connection with you.

We're learning to live with each other. You let me wear you now, and you let me cuddle a bit at night. And I'm learning to enjoy the space, learning to run with the moments when you choose to connect. I'm learning to let you be as different as you are.

And the best part? You smell of the sweetest ambrosia. It is the delicious smell of beeswax and honey. This is something new to me, and I can't get enough. And it's mine all day long, and all night while you tickle my nose.

she's a trooper!

oh deliciousness

and september sun is delicious too!

Ah, picking blackberries in the sunset. What else is new? That's September in the PNW for you.
Everyone does it, see?

highway picking

I didn't know it could get so entertaining, though. Bella was running and skipping and frolicked head long into a ditch full of blackberries. I kid you not. Call me a bad mom, but I'm laughing out loud just thinking about it.

Head first. Like, head on the ground, feet in the air kicking between muffled cries. Oh yes, it was terrible! My heart stopped as I tried to figure out how badly she was hurt and how to get her out of the thorns in one piece. In the end, I just had to grab hold of her legs and yank. I don't even know how she did it. Tripped on a root, I think. A professional diver could not have gone so swiftly into the briers.

berry picking

She cried for maybe a minute. But she looks like she lost a boxing match with a cat. She's a trooper, that one.

what it's worth

anything but

i'm in a foul mood tonight. i have photos coming out my ears and i don't want to edit a single one. tomorrow i go back to my part time job, which went to crap in the 12 weeks i have been gone, including firing a friend (and very good employee).

to top it off, lillia has yet to take a bottle. i do not know how i am going to leave her, even for 6 hours, knowing that she will most likely be screaming the entire time i am away. the thought makes me want to cry. there's no money in this job, and my dreams are in my future business. it's all i can do to even show up tomorrow. i'll be thinking of this face the entire time. here's hoping we all survive.

Dear dearies

Dear darlings,

Another month has come and gone. A bit of cold, followed by a bit of warm (and now a bit of cold again). You two are true Seattlites, not fans of the yummy heat I crave so much. We spend hot days trying to insulate the house and evenings trying to air it out. We barely venture out because it's enough of a challenge without the heat, and I find myself craving the cool break of fall, if only so that I can keep us inside and not feel guilty. I know I'll miss our quiet evening walks. I know I'll curse the rain and the cold and the gray, but the transition to fall is always magical to me and it is finally upon us.

Bella, I cannot tell you enough how much I love to watch you learn, and how much I learn from watching you explore your world. You have an obsession with drawing snowmen - last month you started putting arms on them- arms that spanned the page, that had no connection at all to the little circles we draw (but arms no less). Then came the eyes, polka dots scattered randomly (so it seemed) across the page as you poked holes in the paper shouting eye! eye! eye!

snowmen

Then Grandma taught you the Thumbkin song and when Michele came, you made her draw little punkins on your fingers. Not a day since has gone by that your fingers are free from little smiley faces. And in this new obsession, you have come to understand where eyes, noses, and mouths go. Suddenly you are drawing your own snowman circles, and in them are eyes, noses, and mouths.

punkins

You've started speaking in full sentences (sentences NOT laced with gibberish fillers) like Where are you daddy? or Who is that? You can count to ten (though sewen and eight still get their feelings hurt), and more importantly you understand that each object gets counted once. If you want more than two of something you know to ask for three, not just a more emphatic two. What a weird milestone, but only just last month these concepts were unknown to you - you could rattle off the words like a poem, but applying them in different order and to different objects is just amazing.

happy faaaaace!

What is becoming even more evident to me is that you are internalizing the world around you. You already remember people better than I can. We went to the grand opening of a cafe last week, and despite the crowds, you knew exactly which people (or legs) belonged to you. And when I told you dismissively that we'd have to ask the owner for a balloon if you wanted one, you picked her out of the crowd and went right up to her and asked in your own little gibberish. I was astounded, needless to say, since you had only met her once the previous week.

swinging

Your ability to keep yourself from sleeping is reaching record breaking heights. We've taken you off milk in hopes that it will help, as you've always been sensitive to it. It takes anywhere between 1 and 3 hours to get you to sleep at night. We try to tag team it when Daddy is home, and when he's not, you usually wait up or fall asleep at my feet under the computer. And then you still wake up every hour, sometimes in a tantrum. When we moved into this house you slept perfectly. You have had a few good days recently, so I know it is achievable. I just wish it were more often.

You're just now starting to show jealousy of Lillia's nursing time. You certainly will not let me pump for her and leave you out. Last week there were days that you would not let me beyond your arm's reach. Add a bit of sticky hot weather to a head cold and I couldn't even think of picking you up in my few moments away from Lillia. Sorry baby, the unfairness of it all has begun, but I will try my hardest to let you know you are loved.

sisters

Lillia, my dear. You continue to be a little blob of a blessing. Your smiles are such a treat and help me remember that you are here. Your eyes light up so bright when you smile that you radiate peace. Your smile is bigger than your body can hold, and you tip your whole self backwards with the excitement of it. You raise your eyebrows when things excite you, and when they wiggle independently I can't help but laugh. That's talent, my child.

squeek

You are not terribly demanding, and as your personality surfaces I am reminded how hard I will have to try to make sure you do not fall into the shadow of Bella. You are so very different. And may I add that it is a good thing your cry is loud and (melo)dramatic (re:whiny) because last week when our cold gave you laryngitis you just melted into the background of every day. (You're back to full volume now, by the way.)

cuddle time

We're working on giving you a bottle. I'm due back at work in two weeks (er, two days now) and you have yet to let Daddy feed you (still true). In fact, you're only just now letting him hold you and play with you. You have started tugging on your left ear when you're tired, and it cracks me up. You are so easy to read, like a comfy old book that I've come back to again and again.

What else is there to say? I think I'm going to have to start dividing these letters up! Or posting more little tidbits throughout the month. :O) I'll get right on that. You two certainly keep my life busy and full.

Love,
mama

farewell (to an era)

farewell

Roxanne is headed to college and we won't see her again until Christmas. On the other side of my family, I am the youngest cousin. On this side I'm one of the oldest. Roxanne is the first I watched grow up from baby into adult, and it's surprisingly bittersweet.

Still, I am close enough in age that I remember going to college, the excitement and the thought that a semester was nothing and Christmas would come too soon. Now I have two littles and I'm sure that Christmas will be here before I know it. Now I wish the months would take a little more time in coming. The next time Roxanne sees Lillia she will be 6 months old, and Bella will be closer to three than two. Those thoughts stop me in my tracks.

unexpected

Lori (former stranger)

Some days are just unexpected. I expected to write about my cousin heading off to college, but I'll save that for tomorrow. Today I broke out of my shell and into the 100 Strangers Project - and it felt great! I'm over here today, come visit. :O)

because we can

Lawless

today we blew bubbles inside. oh yes, we did. they were floating in through the window anyhow. delinquent little things sticking to the wall and taunting us on the sides of furniture. and then dave got out a fan and blew them all around. i have video to prove we're not sticks in the mud. it's great to be the grown up some times.

family day

ice cream

today was the last day of the heat. and family day, just because that's how it turned out. in the afternoon we made banana ice cream, watched the sword in the stone, ate sloppy joes, and bella stole the bottle that lillia refused to take (again). now it's 88 inside and that's 4 degrees better than yesterday. :O)

hog

ps lia has been grumpy and hiding from the heat (usually entails hot snuggles but as you can see below sometimes she just forgets and falls asleep in the middle of playtime). today is her 2month bday and she's chubbed in just over 13lb. guess we'll keep her.

out

pps it was a very exciting naptime today when we thought the house exploded. alas, it was just a sonic boom from some fighter jets trying to save the president from a big bad clueless float plane.

cling

survivor

During our breakfast, Bella shouted Bubble! and I looked over incredulously to see this little bubble chilling out on the chair next to her.

The previous night we were blowing bubbles into the sunset, and a few snuck inside. This guy hid out all night, but no bubble is ever truly safe from a 2 year-old.

savoring - our book nook

story time

Welcome to the special book nook we set up for Bella before Lillia was born - a sweet little corner to retreat and take in a bit of story time and TLC. It's what I'm savoring right now.

This girl, grumpy and groggy waking up from a long nap to get over her cold.
story time

Feet, cozy and relaxed.
story time

Those long, curly lashes snuggled up alseep.
story time

Chubby hands resting on my cavernous belly button.
story time

That wild giddy look, which I love.
story time

And the new thing, which I don't love as much, but this too shall pass. No! Wa mines. Mines hands. Don't even think about asking to touch her hands or take something away from her. She sits on them now.
story time

A different perspective, from guess where.
story time

And now Bella has not only begun to read to herself, but to read out loud from memory. It's a treat.

Something New

Whoops!

Looks like I missed a day. Now that I think about it, yesterDAY was quite busy and Lillia grumped all night, so it's no wonder.

However.

I am about to embark upon a project called 100 Strangers.

I'm looking forward to getting out of my comfort zone, finding interesting people and getting to know them. Not to mention improving my photography in it all.

We nodded to plenty of interesting people while hiking today, but I didn't manage to stop, chat, and get portrait out of any of them. In fact, we were quite the site to see, me, Ronnie and Dave each wearing a child. Everyone thought Haydee and Lillia were twins.

Alas, no portraits. Still, It's good to know I can always find great subjects on one of our favorite trails.

So that at least I felt I was warming up to the idea, I snapped this while walking. This group looked so blissful. In fact, everyone on that trail was.

afar

oh, and this one for good measure:

duh. thanks.

Thanks for the warning.

Welcome!

Welcome! Thanks for stopping in. As you can see, I have a passion for photography (and cooking and knitting). My daughters, Bella and Lillia, are my greatest inspiration, so you might find you see a lot of them here, as well as the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Be sure to take a peek around and leave some love in the comments!
